Touring Samtec!

IMG_8961.JPG

Starting off the season is our tour with Samtec! Samtec is a private company that creates cables. They have done so many great things to help our society with what they do. We were lucky enough to be able to have their company help us by teaching us about what they do and supporting us financially. We got to visit some of the people who work there, and that was also very fun. It was interesting to learn about how some of the employees came to work at Samtec. We were also able to take a look at some of the machinery they used to make their product. Overall, it truly was a great experience. Samtec provides so many great opportunities for students that are interested in the field of robotics.

Making Name Tags!

Here we are painting name tags! We are 3D printing and painting name tags for the kids in a Mexican orphanage for when we go to visit them in August. Some of our team members go to the Buena Vida Orphanage in La Mision, Mexico, every year to teach the kids there about STEM. We give the kids there hands on experience and teach the basics of STEM and technology. Last year, the kids were given the chance to design a small robot, program it and drive it. It was great to see the kids learn about STEM and FIRST and be interested in it. We were also able to expose new technology to the kids who were already interested in STEM! Overall, it was a great experience for us and the kids.

Volunteering for the Hillsboro STEM camp at ORTOP!

Some of the team members got the chance to go to the ORTOP building to help with the camp the police were holding to We prepared the ORTOP event by turning on all of the 3D bots. But after trying everything we only had two operational robots in the end. The kids from the Hillsboro Police department STEM program learned all about FIRST and then did a partner activity.Afterwards, they did a teamwork activity involving giving commands to a blindfolded player to pick up and drop rubber bands. The kids gotta play around with the robots and do some competitions with them. (Including a robot dance party). At the end they were given a medal and a bag of Legos and told us what they learned at the end of the day. Overall, the kids seemed to have a good time. Considering that the the event was planned last minute and that the robots were not working, it worked out great because not having the other robots available forced the kids to work together in a “professional” manner. The chaperones that came with the kids also enjoyed watching the kids and the robots.

We are here at a community event where all of the community is invited to get together for a fun festival-like event. This year, we partnered with precision automation company DWFritz® of Wilsonville and Wilsonville FRC team 1425 Error Code Xero. We brought our mini robot, some of the 3D printed robots that ORTOP provided us and some flyers to pass out. Many of the kids enjoyed driving the robots and the demonstrations as well as the adults! We got several game components for the kids to maneuver the robots around. The kids who stopped by our booth and robots and drove our robots were very enticed! Every kid left our booth with smiles, and multiple kids even revisited our robot area, yet there were not many visitors in an age group eligible for FIRST programs, for most of the kids who stopped by our booth were under 5 years old. However, that did not stop them from enjoying themselves when they drove our robots!

Fun In The Park!

Robots, STEM, and Fun

We set up some events at our public library to teach kids about FIRST and STEM. We set up different activities related to STEM for the kids to play with. HobbyTownUSA had sponsored us for these great events and had donated some of their toys for the kids to play with. We had some of the ORTOP robots, the mini robot and our competition robot for the kids to drive. We had one "specialty" activity each week. Many parents asked us questions about what FIRST is, how they can get their kids involved, and more.l Overall, it seemed to be a great experience for the kids and the adults.

Our Visit to Daimler!

We got the chance to go see and tour Daimler! If you don't know who Daimler is, they are a truck company that also work with other brands such as Mercedes Benz, and more. When we got there, we gave a presentation of ourselves as well as the three employees. They told us about what they did and what Daimler did. In the end, we got to do a robot demonstration. We also got to go on a tour throughout the campus. Daimler also owned some 3D printers and showed us those. The also showed us some of their trucks in the making. The team visited Daimler’s virtual reality development lab and played around with their programs. We got to experience what Daimler employees did to disassemble and reassemble truck parts. Overall, it was a great experience for the team.

Java Training!

We went to DWFritz for a week of Java Training. This camp was hosted by FRC team Lake Monsters. They taught us the basics such as the variables and classes to arrays, objects and more. They showed us their robot as well as some of their programs for the robot. On the last day, we got to create our own code for the small robots. Overall, it was an an educating and interesting experiences for the people who attended.

Coca Cola Meeting/Grant

We got the amazing opportunity to go to Swire Coca Cola and talk to them about what we do and also learn what the do at the facility!  We gave a presentation and told high ranking officials about FIRST programs and what they do. We showed off our last year worlds robot and its features, such as the intake and relic arm. We talked about our budget (and how the robot drains a lot of money in building it). The host said that he would be willing to give us $3000!), and that he would like us to use it for participation fees and outreach. At the end of the meeting, the team told Coca Cola about sponsorship and how sponsoring us gives back to our community. Our impact was very big. It was also very surprising and lucky to be able to set up the meeting because the person that we were meeting was normally quite busy, and would not find time for a meeting until six or eight months! We were very grateful, as well, for the grant they gave us because it will help us a lot in the future. Thank you to Swire Coca Cola!
